The Hotel Zone is close to the airport. By car it takes about 30 minutes, according to Xcaret's own travel guide, and longer in traffic. What makes the first hour harder than it needs to be is choosing the ride. The airport is federal ground, and only authorized operators may pick up passengers there. Here are the four ways into the Hotel Zone, and how each one works.

Which terminal you land in

Cancún International Airport has three passenger terminals in use: Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and Terminal 4. Terminal 1 is not in passenger use. As of late September 2026, it was still under renovation, with a reopening planned for late 2026. Your airline decides the terminal, so check your booking before you land rather than a list online.

The terminal matters for one reason. A pre-booked transfer will meet you outside a specific one, and the ADO bus stops at all three.

A pre-booked transfer

Our catalog's advice for Cancún is simple: use a pre-booked transfer or the official taxi booths. A transfer booked ahead, shared or private, removes every decision from the arrival hall. The meeting point is agreed in advance, and the price is settled before you fly.

Save the transfer's meeting point and your hotel in your maps app before you board, and keep the confirmation on WhatsApp, which hotels, transfers, and tours in Cancún use for confirmations. Have a Telcel eSIM working before you leave the airport, so the first message to your driver goes through. Telcel's tourist eSIM needs an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone and a Wi-Fi connection to install, and the line works only after you register it with your passport and a live photo check. Telcel says to install it once you arrive, because the plan starts at installation, so buy it at home and install and register it when you land. If you buy a SIM at a shop instead, our catalog's advice is to bring ID and test the data before you leave.

Book the first ride before the flight, and the first hour takes care of itself.

Official airport taxis

Authorized taxis are sold at counters inside the terminals. The federal transport ministry has said that only operators authorized by the aviation authority and the airport may pick up passengers on airport grounds, which is why the taxi you want is the one sold indoors, not one offered outside.

Confirm the total price to your hotel before you get in. Mexican press has reported complaints about high airport fares in 2025 and 2026, so knowing the number first is the simplest protection. Our catalog's note for Cancún holds here too: carry some cash for taxis.

The ADO bus to Punta Cancún

The public option is the ADO bus. It leaves from Terminals 2, 3, and 4 and runs to Punta Cancún, around kilometer 9 of Kukulcán Boulevard, in about 45 minutes, according to ADO. It stops there, not at individual hotels, so it suits a hotel near Punta Cancún or a light bag.

ADO also runs from the airport to its downtown station and to Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Published timetables for the Hotel Zone route differ between sources, so check the current one on ADO's site before you fly.

Uber and DiDi at the airport

This is the part that confuses most arrivals. In October 2025 a federal judge granted Uber a suspension barring fines and detentions of its drivers at airports while the case proceeds. In March 2026 the federal transport ministry answered that Uber still has no authorization to operate inside airport grounds, and airport sources cited by local press said there were no plans to open pickup areas for ride apps.

Our catalog puts it plainly: Uber is restricted at the airport, and airport pickups follow different rules. App pickups inside the airport are not authorized by the federal authorities, and checks at the airport continued in August 2026. Dropping off is not the issue. Within the city, Uber and DiDi work, but availability varies by area.

The airport is federal ground, and its rules are not the city's.

Getting around once you arrive

Along Kukulcán Boulevard, the R-1 and R-2 city buses connect the Hotel Zone with downtown for most of the day. In September 2026 a new cashless system, MOBI, started on some Cancún routes. Whether R-1 and R-2 have switched is not confirmed, so ask at your hotel how to pay before you board.

Parts of the Hotel Zone may need a short walk to a designated point for app pickups. Our catalog's safety advice for getting around Cancún is to use official taxis or hotel transfers.

Worth knowing

  • In 2025, two of every three passengers at Cancún airport flew internationally: 19.5 million, against 9.9 million domestic, its operator ASUR reports.
  • Buy the Telcel eSIM at home, but install it over Wi-Fi when you land, because the plan starts at installation.
  • Cash is still king. Cards work in resorts and restaurants. Carry some cash for taxis and markets.
