Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain?
Two peaks stand over the Inca city, and a ticket covers only one of them. How each path climbs, what waits at the top, and which one suits the people you travel with.

At a glance
- HUAYNA PICCHU
- About 1 hour up
- TIME INSIDE
- 6 h on 3-A, 7 h on 1-A
- BOTH ROUTES
- S/ 200, foreign adult
Two climbs are sold with a Machu Picchu ticket. Huayna Picchu is route 3-A, the peak that rises behind the classic photo. Machu Picchu Mountain is route 1-A, a climb that starts near the main entrance. Both cost S/ 200 for a foreign adult, against S/ 152 for the standard routes, and both give you far more time inside: up to six hours on 3-A and up to seven on 1-A, against two and a half on the standard routes. A ticket is for one route, so the choice is one or the other.
Huayna Picchu: short and steep
Route 3-A covers about 2.4 km, and the ministry describes it as a route with some degree of difficulty. The climb takes about an hour, according to Andina, the state news agency, on granite steps of uneven height. The path is steep and in places exposed. After maintenance work in June 2026, new steel-cable railings run along the steepest stretches.
At the top, the Inca built temples and terraces, and the summit stands about 260 meters above the Inca city, which lies spread out below.

Huayna Picchu ends at Inca terraces. Machu Picchu Mountain ends at a view, with no ruins at the top.
Machu Picchu Mountain: a wider path

Route 1-A starts at the main entrance, passes the upper terraces, climbs to the summit, and comes back the same way. The Inca built this path too, and Andina describes it as wider and less steep than the one on Huayna Picchu. There is no temple or Inca building at the top, and good photos of the city begin about halfway up.
We found no official figure for the length of this climb or the time it takes. Plan it as the longer day of the two, since the route allows up to seven hours inside. If you travel with children, check the conditions of each route on tuboleto.cultura.pe before you pay.
Closures, entry times, and tickets
Both mountains close at times for work. Huayna Picchu was closed from June 1 to June 30, 2026, and reopened on July 1. Machu Picchu Mountain closed after a landslide in March 2025 and reopened on June 1, 2025.
Entry is at the hour on your ticket. When Huayna Picchu reopened in April 2025, entry ran in two turns, at 7:00 and 9:00. We found no official confirmation of the 2026 hours, so go by the times the ticket site offers for your date. Places on both routes are limited. Of the 1,000 tickets sold in person in Machupicchu Pueblo each day, Andina listed 50 for each mountain.
How to choose
For Inca terraces at the summit and the city right below, Huayna Picchu is the shorter, steeper climb. For a wider path with views on the way up, Machu Picchu Mountain is the gentler option. For someone uneasy with heights, the exposed stretches on Huayna Picchu matter more than the hour it takes.

Whichever you choose, arrive on time: entry is at the hour on your ticket, with a tolerance of 30 minutes in the low season and 45 in the high season. Worth knowing
- Huayna Picchu's so-called Temple of the Moon sits on the mountain's side, below the Inca city, and its name has no archaeological basis.
- Uneasy with heights? Machu Picchu Mountain's path is wider and less steep than the one on Huayna Picchu.
- Cash is still king. Cards work in central spots. Keep some cash for taxis, markets, and tips.
