Machu Picchu sold out? What to do

A full calendar on the ticket site does not have to end the plan. Where tickets can still appear, what the in-person sale offers, and when to change the week instead.

Machu Picchu sells out more often now than before. The site has a daily limit, and since September 2026 a ticket exists only once it is paid, so places no longer sit held and then come back. In October 2026 even the in-person tickets sold out for three days in a row, and from November 3 to December 29 the daily limit drops from 5,600 to 4,500. If the date you wanted is gone, these are the options, in the order worth trying.

Look at other times and other routes

A sold-out morning does not mean a sold-out day. Tickets are sold by entry time, and each route has its own quota, so an afternoon entry or a different route can still be open when your first choice is not. On the official site, tuboleto.cultura.pe, check every entry time on your date before you change the date itself.

Changing the route costs less than it seems. When the ministry introduced the current circuits in 2024, it said that every circuit allows the classic photo with Machu Picchu behind you. We compared the routes, and how long each lets you stay, in Which Machu Picchu circuit should you choose?.

When your route is sold out, change the hour first, then the route, and only then the day.

The in-person sale in Machupicchu Pueblo

Up to 1,000 tickets a day are sold in person at the Centro Cultural in Machupicchu Pueblo, the town below the site. Since May 2026, as an exceptional measure, the ministry's office in Cusco has sold them up to three days ahead, depending on availability, according to Andina and La República.

It is a real option, but it only helps if you can be in the town, and it is not a certainty. Queues form, and on October 14 to 16, 2026, the in-person tickets ran out and the ministry declined to add more. Bring your passport, and treat it as a second chance rather than the plan.

The Inca Trail

Hikers on the Inca Trail reach Machu Picchu on a separate permit, and they enter the site by route 3-B. The trail's main routes take 500 people a day, and the short route from kilometer 104 takes 250, under a 2025 ministry resolution. Permits are sold only through tour agencies authorized by SERNANP, the national parks service, not by individual travelers. The trail closes every February for maintenance: in 2026, from January 31 to March 1. The 2027 dates had not been announced by October 23, 2026.

Trains and packages

A train ticket does not include the entry. PeruRail tells travelers to buy the entrance ticket separately, and Inca Rail includes it only in its bundled packages. A package that includes the entry can help when buying alone is hard, as long as the ticket is issued in your own name, since tickets are now tied to the visitor's ID.

Move the day, not the trip

If no date works, the week can bend around the ticket. Choose the Machu Picchu date the calendar still offers, then build the other days around it. In our routes, Machu Picchu has a day of its own, kept apart from the other long days.

What to avoid is buying from a stranger. A ticket in someone else's name is the risk, and the only official online seller is tuboleto.cultura.pe. We wrote about the scams in Is Cusco safe? Scams to know before you go, and about how the purchase works in How to buy Machu Picchu tickets in 2026 and 2027.

Worth knowing

  • Huayna Picchu, the peak behind the classic view, rises to 2,693 meters, about 260 meters above the Inca city itself.
  • Planning the Inca Trail for February? It closes every February for maintenance, so choose another month or the train.
  • Cash is still king. Cards work in central spots. Keep some cash for taxis, markets, and tips.
