On September 22, 2026, Peru's Ministry of Culture began selling Machu Picchu tickets in a new way: no reservations held without payment, only tickets bought and paid on the spot. The trial period ended on October 22, and by October 23 no official decision on what follows had been published. The Culture Minister has spoken of the new model as the one that stays, telling El Peruano on October 14 that there will be no more reservations. We will update this page when the ministry decides.

Where to buy

Online, the only official seller is the Ministry of Culture's site, tuboleto.cultura.pe. Type the address yourself: in 2024 the ministry warned about a lookalike site written without the dot, tuboletocultura.pe.

There is also an in-person sale in Machupicchu Pueblo, the town below the site, of up to 1,000 tickets a day at the Centro Cultural, according to Andina. It is a fallback, not a plan. On October 14 to 16, 2026, the in-person tickets sold out, and the ministry's office in Cusco declined to add more.

How the purchase works

You choose a circuit, a route, a date, and an entry time, then enter the visitor's details. From that moment you have 15 minutes to pay. If the payment is not completed, the ticket goes back on sale for someone else. Only once the payment is confirmed is the ticket issued, in the visitor's name and tied to their ID document, according to Infobae and Andina.

A Machu Picchu ticket is now a name and a passport number, not just a time.

Choosing a circuit and a route

Machu Picchu runs three circuits with ten routes, a system in force since June 2024. Four of the ten routes give you two and a half hours inside. Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain are routes of their own, with their own price, so they are chosen when you buy, not added later. According to the ministry's route maps, the Huayna Picchu route allows up to six hours, and the Machu Picchu Mountain route up to seven.

You enter at the time printed on the ticket, with a tolerance of 30 minutes in the low season and 45 in the high season, and there is no re-entry once you leave, except for reasons of force majeure. At the gate, the rule is a valid passport for foreign visitors. We wrote about the rest of the day, the train and the bus, in Machu Picchu from Cusco in one day.

What it costs

Under the ministry's tariff in force on October 23, 2026, a foreign adult pays S/ 152 for a standard route and S/ 200 for Huayna Picchu, Machu Picchu Mountain, or the Gran Caverna route. Students pay S/ 77 and S/ 125, and children from 3 to 17 pay S/ 70 and S/ 118. Children under 3 enter free. A conservation fee from SERNANP, the national parks service, was set to apply from May 2026, and its amount is not stated in the official text, so check the total at checkout.

When tickets run short

The site has a daily limit. In 2026 it is 5,600 visitors in the high season, from June 19 to November 2, and 4,500 on most other days. From November 3 to December 29, 2026, the limit is 4,500, and several routes marked for the high season only are likely to close. If your dates fall in those weeks, buy as early as you can, and if they are gone, read Machu Picchu sold out? What to do.

Tickets for 2027

The minister said on October 14, 2026, that tickets will soon go on sale up to a year ahead, but no start date had been announced by October 23. The daily limits and prices for 2027 have not been published yet either. For 2026, they came out at the start of November 2025, in two ministry resolutions. Until the 2027 rules appear, treat any site selling 2027 tickets with care, and buy only from tuboleto.cultura.pe.

Before you buy

Buy the entry first and plan the rest of the day around its time. Pack for the site's rules too: bags no larger than 40 x 35 x 20 cm, no food, and no walking sticks or umbrellas. We put those in What to pack for Cusco, from cold nights to the high days, and the scams worth knowing are in Is Cusco safe? Scams to know before you go. Machu Picchu has its day in our free routes for 3 days, 5 days, and 7 days in Cusco.

Worth knowing

  • Hikers who arrive on the Inca Trail enter Machu Picchu by a single route, 3-B, and the trail's main routes take 500 people a day.
  • Buying for someone else? Enter their name and ID number exactly as on their passport, since the ticket is issued to the visitor.
  • Cash is still king. Cards work in central spots. Keep some cash for taxis, markets, and tips.
